Chamois seen again in Pelister after long absence

Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) has been recorded again in Pelister National Park after a prolonged absence, park staff announced, following intensified ranger work that has increased wildlife visibility across both the active management zone and the strict protection zone.

Camera traps map a living ecosystem

Trail‑camera images captured by park teams show where animals move, their numbers, apparent health and how they function as part of the food chain. "On the camera‑trap photos it is easy to notice where the game moves, how numerous it is, in what health condition it is found and how in everyday life it functions as part of the food chain," reads the Pelister National Park post published on Facebook.

The first image shows a wolf (Canis lupus) acting as a predator, moving with its prey — a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).

The second image, taken after a period of intensified monitoring, recorded a chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) for the first time in a long while.

The third picture documents wild boar (Sus scrofa) traveling in a group, a behaviour typical for this species on Pelister.

Other frames include a wildcat (Felis silvestris), an animal visitors sometimes confuse with the Balkan lynx; the park notes that the wildcat has distinct characteristics and differs significantly from the Balkan lynx.
