At 98, Dobrila Čabrić still drives herself — travelled alone to Belgrade in a Smart
The Never Too Late winner — who survived a collision on the road to Ohrid — bought a Smart after her old car was destroyed and still drives and travels alone.
At 98 years old, Dobrila Čabrić still insists on travelling under her own power — most recently she arrived in Belgrade on her own, behind the wheel of a small Smart. The longtime stage figure, a winner of the veterans’ competition Never Too Late, says she simply cannot live without a car.
After a serious crash, she bought a new car and kept driving
A few years ago, while driving toward Ohrid, Čabrić was involved in a road accident: to avoid a head-on collision she went off the road and her car was completely wrecked. She suffered minor leg injuries and recovered quickly.
Only months later she surprised many by buying another car. "I bought a small 'Smart' which is very good for traffic jams and heavy traffic, as it is today. I have the feeling as if I'm sitting on a motorbike, and my legs are almost on the wheels, but I feel good," she said recently on the Grand show, charming viewers with anecdotes from her life.
She has spoken about travelling alone before: "I don't drive, I fly, and I will keep flying. I think, people are always surprised and ask me 'Did you come to Belgrade alone?' I came alone, and I'll return alone. I don't understand why that's a problem, I've been a driver for 75 years. I drove across all of Europe by car, so those are my legs," Čabrić has said.
Born on 1 February 1928 in Barić near Požarevac, she currently lives in Dojran. Čabrić is a doyenne of the Macedonian National Theatre and returned to the spotlight when she won the veterans’ singing show Never Too Late five years ago.
