The Directorate for Protection and Rescue safely removed two 75 mm mortar shells dating from World War I after they were discovered at the Bitola–Prilep highway construction site.
The location where the explosive items were found was marked immediately and then inspected by a specialist to check the immediate area and surroundings for any additional unexploded ordnance.
Recovery and disposal
According to the agency, the Directorate's pyrotechnician, Gjorgji Stefanov, yesterday afternoon, following standard operating procedures for unexploded ordnance (UXO), recovered the two devices from the terrain known as Karakli near the village of Alinci in the Municipality of Prilep.
The recovered 75 mm mortar shells were placed into secure storage after removal. The agency said they will be transported to an appropriate range for planned, controlled destruction.
