Russian air strikes on Kyiv kill a child, injure several
One child was killed and officials reported multiple wounded after Russian rockets and drones struck Kyiv and nearby districts on September 30, 2026.
Early on September 30, 2026, Russian aerial strikes hit Kyiv and surrounding areas, killing one child and injuring several people, Ukrainian officials reported.
Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, wrote on the messaging app Telegram that the attacks sparked fires which spread to private houses near a shop and a warehouse. Emergency crews responded to blazes across the city as residents described explosions.
Conflicting initial injury counts from different officials
Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, said on Telegram that a child was killed in a Russian attack involving rockets and unmanned aerial vehicles, and that three people were wounded. He added that residential buildings and vehicles were destroyed.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine, posting on Twitter, reported slightly different figures: "Kyiv: 1 person killed, 4 injured as a result of the Russian shelling. About 10 private houses were damaged in the Sviatoshynskyi district. Fires also broke out in the Podil, Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts, which rescuers promptly extinguished."
Local authorities and rescue teams continued damage assessment and firefighting operations through the morning. Eyewitnesses in multiple Kyiv districts recounted hearing explosions and seeing smoke rising over residential neighborhoods.
