G7 urges Iran to stop arming and supporting the Houthis

G7 foreign ministers called on Iran to stop arming and supporting the Houthis in Yemen, describing Tehran’s behavior as a dangerous escalation that threatens international trade and risks broader instability.
The appeal was made after a meeting in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where ministers from the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States discussed recent Houthi attacks and their regional impact.
What the ministers said
In their joint statement the ministers were blunt in condemning the strikes. “We strongly condemn the unacceptable continued attacks carried out by the Houthis in Yemen and against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” the statement said.
They also urged a halt to actions that endanger commercial shipping and called for a return to diplomacy. “We call on the Houthis to immediately cease all military actions, all threats and attacks against civilian shipping and to, in good faith, return to the political process,” they added.
The ministers warned that continued escalation — including foreign support for armed groups — could disrupt global trade routes and contribute to wider instability in the region. They specifically singled out Iran’s provision of weapons and support to the Houthis as a central concern.
The statement does not outline new punitive measures but reinforces diplomatic pressure on Tehran and underlines the G7’s call for a political resolution to the conflict in Yemen.
