Large amounts of Saharan dust haze skies across North Macedonia

Since the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, North Macedonia has been under sultry, oppressive conditions accompanied by an increased presence of Saharan dust and sand that has left the air visibly hazy, meteorologist Slavcho Poposki reported.

Poposki posted a warning about the health impact: "Especially bad for meteopaths, who may experience more serious health problems. Also, since the morning hours of today, Friday, August 28, we have high air temperatures," he posted.

Visibility reduced and air feels 'dirty'

The combination of suspended dust and high temperatures has made the atmosphere appear dirty and reduced clarity in many parts of the country. Observers noted a muted sky and a general feeling of heaviness in the air.

Medical professionals and vulnerable groups—particularly people sensitive to weather changes, respiratory patients, and the elderly—may feel the effects more strongly during these conditions. Authorities and experts commonly advise limiting prolonged outdoor exertion when dust levels rise.

The meteorological observation and Poposki's statement were posted on August 28, 2026 at 08:47. Forecasts and air-quality updates may follow as the situation evolves through the day.
