City of Skopje begins full reconstruction of the Macedonia Square ground fountain

The City of Skopje has started a thorough reconstruction of the ground fountain on Macedonia Square, announcing a permanent overhaul of both the mechanical equipment and the fountain's load-bearing structure.

Specialised German equipment and an automated control system will be restored

City officials said the work goes beyond routine servicing: technicians will repair and recalibrate an automated system and install specialised components manufactured in Germany to restore full functionality.

Alongside the technical service, crews will upgrade structural elements. “The existing supporting substructure, made of plastic supports that held concrete slabs weighing about 100 kilograms per element, is being replaced with a new structure of stainless-steel profiles, designed to withstand significantly greater mechanical loads. This permanently improves the stability, safety and durability of the entire system. With the renovation, the fountain will again become a meeting place, children's play area, photo spot, promenade and source of fond memories, restoring life to the heart of the city and once more becoming one of Skopje’s most attractive landmarks,” the City of Skopje said.

Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski shared a short video of the on-site works on his social media channels, showing workers removing old elements and preparing for the new installations.

Built as part of the Skopje 2014 project, the ground fountain was commissioned in 2015 during the term of Koce Trajanovski. Over the years the fountain suffered repeated damage when trucks and other heavy vehicles broke through its surface.
