Lightning kills 95 sheep on Mount Jakupica
A strike roughly 500 metres below Solunska Glava hit a flock of about 1,200 sheep; the owner reported the loss to veterinary and police teams.
A lightning strike on the slopes of Mount Jakupica killed 95 sheep from a large flock grazing below Solunska Glava, police and veterinary officials reported. The incident took place about 500 metres below the summit and was reported at approximately 19:30 on the same day.
The owner of the flock is a 37-year-old shepherd from the village of Gorno Jabolchishte. He was not at the exact spot where the lightning struck, nor were most animals from the herd of roughly 1,200 sheep.
Inspection by veterinary and police teams
The shepherd, identified as Tasin Useinov, notified the Agency for Food and Veterinary (AFV). An AFV inspector joined an investigative team from the Veles Police Department to examine the scene and document the losses.
Representatives of the local Union of Sheep Breeders have been contacted by Useinov and expect state institutions to find ways to help him recover and continue his work. The case has also been brought to the attention of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The same storm system that struck the Veles region on Wednesday afternoon caused broader damage in the area, and emergency services were active in several locations as crews responded to weather-related incidents.
