Croatian couple seeks strangers on Reddit to be witnesses — no friends or relatives invited

A Croatian couple has posted on Reddit asking for strangers to act as their witnesses at a civil wedding because they want no traditional celebration and do not want friends or relatives present.

The partners, aged 36 and 40, explained in their post that they are looking for another couple with similar wishes so the two pairs can exchange the role of witnesses during a brief ceremony at the registry office.

Minimalist plan and practical motives

They made clear their intention is to legalize the marriage only at the registry office, avoiding a large celebration, extensive planning and dozens of guests. The plan, they wrote, is simple: the two couples act as each other’s witnesses, exchange congratulations, have a quick drink and then go their separate ways.

On the question of timing and location the couple said they are flexible, but that the Zagreb area would be most convenient for them.

The Reddit post quickly drew a wave of reactions. Some users praised the idea as practical and pragmatic, while others were surprised that the couple wanted to exclude close friends and family entirely.

Asked whether they had problems with friends or lacked social connections, the couple replied: "It's not about the friends. We want something that is only ours, and for that we don't need either friends or relatives." Several interested respondents commented: one couple from Zagreb offered to organize the ceremonies together, and another Reddit user joked that a marriage would bring five days off work because the two already live as if married.

The couple that posted the ad welcomed the offers and left open the possibility of moving forward together soon with their unconventional wedding plans.
