Kalina Ignovska opens "Svetlina na tradicijata" in Skopje
A new solo show in Skopje highlights embroidery, weaving and other women's craft through light-driven installations.
The solo exhibition "Svetlina na tradicijata" (Light of Tradition) by Kalina Ignovska opens on 15 September at 20:00 in the KSP "Centar-Jadro" gallery in Skopje and will remain on view until 21 September.
An intimate examination of women's handiwork
Ignovska's new show focuses on women’s making — the hands, patience, skill and quiet strength that preserved and transmitted cultural heritage across generations. The works on display reconnect traditional techniques such as embroidery, knitting and weaving with contemporary artistic expression and light-based presentation.
Many of the pieces incorporate materials and objects that carry time and memory: not only patterns and techniques, but traces of daily life and the lives of the women who made them. The exhibition rescues those practices from private domestic spaces and frames them as active, living art.
Some of the handcrafted items included in the installation were made by actress Nada Geshoska, whose work in Macedonian culture is well known; here her handcrafts reveal a different, more intimate side of her creative life and become part of the wider story of women who create, whether on stage, in art or in the quiet of their homes.
About the role of illumination in the show Ignovska writes: "The light here is not only part of the object. It is a way to make visible what has long existed in silence — the labor, creativity and stories of the women before us. Light that does not only illuminate the object, but also the woman behind it."
Kalina Ignovska (born 1982 in Skopje) is a graphic designer and scenographer. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje, department of graphic design. Since 2006 she has worked as a scenographer and graphic designer on advertising and music videos, films and series, including Vremeto na kometata, Stela, Mimi, Ubij gi prvo decata, Prespav and Kukhen pritvor. From 2018 she is a co-owner and designer at Infini art & design studio, and since 2019 she has been involved in organizing the Litera festival.
