Report: Only 8% of Roma women employed in 2022–2024

A report by the Commission for Prevention and Protection against Discrimination covering 2022–2024 found that only 8% of Roma women are employed.

Local group urges Roma women to speak up

The Shtip association "Rodop" called on Roma women and girls to not remain silent when they face discrimination or violence, stressing that reporting such cases is essential to stop abuse.

According to the association, improving access to education and knowledge of legal rights is vital. "They must be educated and know their rights," the group said, arguing that awareness is a prerequisite for seeking help and employment.

The report highlights a stark connection between low levels of formal education and barriers to the labour market: a large share of Roma women lack even primary schooling, which makes finding jobs difficult.

That educational gap, the report warns, also increases exposure to both physical and psychological violence, because economic dependence and marginalisation reduce options for victims to leave abusive situations.
