Container ship GFS Pride sank, Cape Dao reported sinking after rocket strikes near Strait of Hormuz

Two commercial vessels were struck by rockets near the Strait of Hormuz, one of which — the container ship GFS Pride — has reportedly sunk, while the cargo ship Cape Dao is reported to be in the process of sinking after it was hit on 23 September.

The GFS Pride, sailing under the flag of Singapore, went down after being struck, maritime safety sources said. The vessel is managed by GFS Ship Management FZE, based in the United Arab Emirates; the company could not be reached for comment.

The Cape Dao, registered to Antigua and Barbuda, was hit by a rocket on 23 September and is now described by sources as in the process of sinking near the same strait. The ship is operated by Peonies Shipmanagement FZE, also headquartered in the UAE; that company was not available for comment.

Official notice and wider implications

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) issued a notice saying two commercial vessels were struck by "unknown rockets" in separate incidents in the waters near the Strait of Hormuz. The statement did not identify the attackers.

The incidents highlight continuing risks to merchant shipping in the area, a critical choke point for global oil and maritime traffic. Authorities and operators are monitoring the situation, and further information on casualties or environmental impact has not been confirmed.
