Cattle roaming Kriva Palanka damage streets and property; municipality asks for 30‑day crisis

Cattle are roaming freely through the centre of Kriva Palanka, causing material damage and alarming residents, the local authorities say. Videos shared by citizens show animals walking unimpeded along the town’s central streets, prompting safety concerns for both people and traffic.

According to the Municipality of Kriva Palanka, "more than 1,000 head of cattle" are moving uncontrolled across municipal and private land, damaging crops, orchards, fences and buildings. The municipality warned that the animals pose a clear risk to public safety and road users.

Local authorities request emergency measures

The Municipal Crisis Headquarters has formally asked the Government of North Macedonia to declare a 30-day crisis and to provide additional institutional support to tackle the situation. Officials say the measure is needed to mobilise resources for containment and restitution.

Meanwhile, the Municipality of Kriva Palanka has opened a damage registry. Residents whose agricultural fields, orchards, fences, structures or other property were destroyed are instructed to submit damage reports through the municipality’s official website.

Citizens have expressed growing frustration on social media as footage circulates of large animals wandering in areas where pedestrians and vehicles normally move freely. Local officials have urged residents to avoid contact with unattended livestock and to report new incidents to municipal services.
