LDP: No subsidies for fuel bought abroad, yes to VAT refund for Macedonian citizens and businesses

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) urged the Government of North Macedonia to stop subsidizing fuel purchases made in neighbouring countries and instead implement a VAT refund for domestic consumers and businesses, calling the latter a direct measure to ease household and company expenses.

LDP says public money must target citizens and the domestic economy

The party reminded authorities of its proposal to return value‑added tax on expensive fuels as a concrete, targeted relief that would benefit Macedonian households and local firms rather than motorists who purchase fuel abroad.

In a statement, LDP criticised what it described as improvised and insufficiently thought‑out measures from the Government and demanded a different allocation of public funds.

Addressing specific beneficiaries, LDP said the refund should prioritise “Macedonian citizens, carriers, transporters, freight forwarders and domestic business,” arguing these groups need support most when living costs rise.

The party also called on the Government to stop spending on “unnecessary costs, celebrations, new positions and party privileges” and to show that it can identify and manage the country’s real economic problems.

LDP asked the Government to consider and find a way to implement the VAT refund for fuels and to demonstrate responsible public finance management in the interest of protecting Macedonian citizens.
