North Macedonia has a state data centre near Prilep — operational since 2023
Two kilometres from Prilep a fortified state data centre — built with 11.5 million euros and designed as a disaster‑recovery hub.

Macedonia has had a state-built data centre since 2023: a fortified facility two kilometres from Prilep that the Ministry of Interior says will store and protect the country’s primary IT systems.
The government investment in the complex totals 11.5 million euros. Located outside Prilep, the installation is presented as the first state-run project of its kind in the Western Balkans and is intended as a secure backup and disaster-recovery site for critical public data.
Design and protective layers
The facility was designed by Belgrade-based 1H2 Studio under architect Zoran Abadić. Its layout follows a ‘‘room within a room’’ principle: a fully isolated server chamber sits at the core, surrounded by a concentric ring that houses mechanical, electrical and telecommunications equipment as well as space for external providers.
Construction emphasizes physical resilience: the roof, walls and ceiling are built without openings and consist of double reinforced concrete filled with high-efficiency fireproofing materials. Access is tightly controlled and allowed only to authorised officials during official visits.
On-site staffing includes a separate sector for network technicians, operators and physical security personnel who work around the clock. The security package also comprises dual reinforced-concrete walls with thermal and fire insulation, an outer protective fence, 24-hour video surveillance and armed guards.
Officials say the technical and physical protection levels meet contemporary Western standards for secure facilities and mark an upgrade in critical infrastructure for North Macedonia and the wider Balkan region.
