Buildings across North Macedonia lit green for European Day of Organ Donation

The Government building and numerous public facilities across the country were illuminated in green yesterday and last night to mark the European Day of Organ, Tissue and Cell Donation, Health Minister Sasho Klekovski announced.

Lighting campaigns were reported in Skopje, Prilep, Struga, Veles, Tetovo, Kavadarci and several other municipalities as part of the awareness initiative.

Klekovski used the occasion to thank families of donors, living donors who have given part of themselves to loved ones, the transplant teams, and public institutions that joined the campaign by lighting their premises.

Health minister's appeal

“Organ donation begins with a conversation. Talk with your family, tell them your decision, so they do not have to decide for you. Every donor is hope. Every 'yes' is a new life,” Klekovski said, urging citizens to discuss their wishes with relatives.

Officials said the lighting was intended both to honour donor families and to encourage citizens to consider and register their willingness to donate organs or to discuss donation with next of kin.

The ministry stressed that visible gestures like lighting public buildings in green are one element of a broader effort to increase awareness of transplantation and the role of donors in saving lives.
