Macron opens International Space Summit in Paris

French President Emmanuel Macron opened the International Space Summit in Paris, a gathering that brought together representatives of the European Union and a wide range of foreign dignitaries. The event focused on the growing strategic importance of space and the need for multilateral rules to govern its use.

Macron said that space "belongs to everyone," but stressed that its use must be regulated by agreements that include the international community rather than being left to a handful of states.

He added that "The space transition is incredible," and argued that France can join the new generation of space powers while Europe must also be "part of the race" to develop and use space capabilities.

Security and international coordination

Macron warned that space is an area where competition for dominance could turn into conflict, and on that basis he called for precise treaties to govern space capacities. He said he intends to pursue such agreements in the field of space security in coordination with the United Nations.

The summit in Paris is intended as a forum for states and European institutions to discuss how to shape rules, cooperation and safeguards as civilian, commercial and military activity in space expands.

Organizers expect the talks to include technical, legal and diplomatic proposals aimed at preventing escalation and ensuring that space remains accessible and safe for a broad international community.
