Mickoski: More worried about the EU's future than North Macedonia's accession status

Hristijan Mickoski said he is more worried about the future of the European Union than about North Macedonia being excluded from recent reports on EU accession steps for other countries.

Asked about media reports that Albania, Montenegro, Ukraine and Moldova would receive accession roadmaps, Mickoski said he had no such information and urged clarity from EU institutions. He spoke during the presentation of a programme to revitalize hydroelectric plants.

Concerns about regional and European trends

"If that's true you should ask the EU why that is. That information was published by a media outlet. Considering that we delivered most of the reforms that are part of the Reform Agenda and the Growth Plan already in two reporting periods, and if accession to the EU is a process which is evaluated on the basis of merit, for me this is illogical. That's why we should see whether it's so or not, and my information says that it is not so," Mickoski said at today's presentation of the revitalization of the hydroelectric plants.

Mickoski argued that policy-making must take recent regional developments into account. He cited a failed referendum in Iceland, three election cycles in German states where non-mainstream anti-immigrant forces have been successful, and the prospect of presidential elections in France where opinion polls currently favor Marine Le Pen. "At the moment we have two major wars. So this is a sort of indicator on the basis of which policies must be built in the period ahead. We will do our domestic task, the rest is not up to us," he added.

He reiterated that the government has a clear plan at home and said domestic reforms remain the priority even as he signalled broader concern about the EU's political trajectory.
