Most traffic accidents in the Polog region occur on Monday, Thursday and Friday
SVR Tetovo records a drop in the number of accidents in the first seven months of 2026, but warns that certain days and hours remain risky.

The days Monday, Thursday and Friday are the most risky for traffic in the area served by SVR Tetovo, data presented by the police show. The most common causes of accidents are collisions between moving vehicles, run-offs from the road and collisions involving pedestrians, and the highest-risk locations are streets in residential neighborhoods and open road sections with high traffic volume.
Numbers for the period January–July 2026
SVR Tetovo say that in the period from 1 January to 28 July 2026 a significant reduction in the number of traffic accidents was recorded, which shows a positive trend in the improvement of road safety, despite increased frequency in July due to the return of persons from the diaspora. “In the period from 1 January to 28 July 2026, on the area covered by the Sector for Internal Affairs (SVR) Tetovo a significant reduction in traffic accidents was recorded, indicating a positive trend of increased traffic safety, especially during July when vehicle frequency is significantly higher due to the arrival of compatriots from the diaspora. In this period this year a total of 590 traffic accidents were registered, of which 368 in the Tetovo region and 222 in Gostivar. This figure shows a reduction of 74 accidents compared to the same period in 2025, when a total of 664 accidents occurred, of which 382 in Tetovo and 282 in Gostivar. This year there was only one traffic accident with two fatalities in the Gostivar region and none in Tetovo, while in the same period last year there were 4 traffic accidents with 4 fatalities, of which one in Tetovo and three in Gostivar,” say SVR Tetovo.
This year 57 accidents with serious bodily injuries were recorded (32 in Tetovo and 25 in Gostivar), compared to 59 in 2025. There were 254 accidents with minor injuries recorded (175 in Tetovo and 79 in Gostivar), compared to 299 in the same period last year.
“During this year, 65 people suffered serious bodily injuries (37 in Tetovo and 28 in Gostivar), while in 2025 that number was 69 people. Minor bodily injuries were suffered by 587 people (281 in Tetovo and 106 in Gostivar), compared to 456 people who were injured last year,” add SVR Tetovo, pointing out that the majority of the injured are drivers, followed by passengers, motorcyclists, scooter riders and pedestrians.
The police call on drivers and pedestrians to be especially careful on sections with higher traffic volume and during the period from 12:00 to 20:00 when the frequency of accidents increases.
