Kumanovo installs cameras and fences at Krasta landfill

The Krasta landfill near Kumanovo has been outfitted with new video surveillance cameras and protective fencing, and the municipality announced that gates and lighting will be added in the coming weeks. Mayor Maksim Dimitrievski published the measures on his Facebook profile, saying they aim to stop unauthorized entries and strengthen control over the site.

Municipal action follows fires and blockades

According to the mayor's post, the immediate installations include "new video surveillance cameras and protective fences at the Krasta landfill," with "additional protective gates and lighting" to follow. The upgrades come after a period of repeated fires and blockades that disrupted waste collection and disposal in Kumanovo.

Residents of nearby neighbourhoods had earlier demanded better pollution control and tighter supervision of the landfill. In response, the Municipal Protection and Rescue Headquarters adopted a set of conclusions on 10 October 2026 calling for stepped-up video monitoring, physical security and repairs to damaged sections of the fence to prevent unauthorized access and improve oversight.

Dimitrievski framed the installations as concrete steps to improve safety and prevent unwanted incidents. In his post he wrote that the actions are intended to increase security, stop unauthorized entries and provide "more efficient control and protection of the area."

The mayor's Facebook message did not specify deadlines for installing the gates and lighting, nor did it disclose the cost of the works carried out so far. "We continue activities for a safer, more orderly and better controlled landfill!" he added.
