Kumanovo Prosecutors Seek Detention for 40-Year-Old from Kratovo Over Knife Attack on Police Officer

The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Kumanovo has launched an investigation and asked a court to order pre-trial detention for a 40-year-old man from Kratovo accused of attacking a police officer while the officer was performing public security duties.

Prosecutors say the suspect is suspected of committing the criminal offense "Attack on an official while performing security duties" under Article 383, paragraph 3 in relation to paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code. The alleged incident took place on September 11.

How the incident unfolded

According to the prosecutor's statement, two police officers forced open a locked door to the room where the suspect was located. The man then attacked the officers. One police officer sustained serious injuries from a knife — a stab wound and a cut.

Describing the severity of the injuries and the circumstances of the intervention, the prosecutor prepared an order to begin an investigation and submitted a motion for detention to the judge responsible for preliminary proceedings.

The public prosecutor told the court that, given the risk of flight and the possibility the suspect could repeat the offense, detention was the appropriate preventive measure to request.

The Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Kumanovo issued the notice on September 14, 2026.
