Damage to JANAF pipeline causes oil leak near Nova Gradiška
Damage occurred during works between Sisak and Slavonski Brod; specialised crews are pumping oil and remediating the site.

A section of the Jadranski naftovod (JANAF) pipeline in Croatia was damaged during construction work, causing oil to spill near the town of Nova Gradiška. The incident occurred on Friday, November 6, 2026, and cleanup operations were reported to be continuing on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
Cause, containment and response
JANAF said the damage happened after part of a work machine fell onto the pipeline along the stretch between Sisak and Slavonski Brod. Oil leaked into a trench that had been dug for the construction works. Operators stopped the outflow by closing valves and reducing pressure in the affected section.
Specialized teams were deployed at the site to pump out the spilled oil and to remediate the contaminated area. Authorities and company crews focused on limiting further spread of contamination and on recovering the product from the excavation channel.
Croatian public broadcaster reported that a strong smell of oil was noticeable in the surroundings of Nova Gradiška and that the odour had spread toward Gradiška. JANAF reassured the public that "there was no danger to the population and that the supply of drinking water is not endangered."
JANAF is one of the region's key crude‑oil transport companies, operating infrastructure that links Adriatic Sea terminals with refineries in central and southeastern Europe. At this stage there are no official figures on material damage nor on any potential effect on oil deliveries; the company said it would provide further updates on the repair work.
