Eight hospitalized with neuroinvasive West Nile fever; two in intensive care
Clinic director Fadil Cana says two patients are intubated and the outbreak has caused an eighth death — a 70-year-old admitted August 25.
Eight patients with confirmed neuroinvasive West Nile fever are currently hospitalized at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases — Skopje, the clinic director Fadil Cana said at a press briefing.
Over the weekend the clinic also recorded the eighth fatality linked to the virus. The victim was a 70-year-old man who was admitted on August 25 in a very serious condition.
"Immediately after admission he was placed in the intensive care unit, intubated and was on mechanical ventilation. During this ten-day stay the patient was in an extremely serious general condition and despite all treatment, all efforts of the intensive care unit, over the weekend he died," Cana said.
Two patients in critical condition
Of the eight hospitalized patients, two remain in a more severe clinical state and are being treated in the intensive care unit; both are intubated and on mechanical ventilation, the director said.
Cana added that, with the exception of one patient from Sveti Nikole, all others are from Skopje and are over 60 years old.
He also noted that no new patient with confirmed West Nile fever has been admitted to the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in the past four days.
