Eight patients with neuroinvasive West Nile hospitalized at Clinic for Infectious Diseases
Seven patients are from Skopje, one from Sveti Nikole; two over-60 patients are intubated in intensive care, clinic director Fadil Cana says.
Eight patients with confirmed neuroinvasive West Nile disease are currently hospitalized at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, the clinic director, Fadil Cana, said. Seven of the patients are from Skopje and one is from Sveti Nikole.
“Of the eight patients, two have more severe clinical presentations and are in the intensive care unit, they are intubated and on mechanical ventilation. All patients are over 60 years old. One of the hospitalized patients is from Sveti Nikole, and the others are from Skopje,” Cana said.
The clinic reported that no new patient with a confirmed West Nile infection has been admitted in the past four days.
Fatal case and clinical course
The outbreak has already produced the eighth fatality in the country. The deceased was a 70-year-old patient who was admitted to the clinic on August 25 in a markedly severe condition.
According to the clinic, the patient was immediately placed in the intensive care unit, intubated and put on mechanical ventilation. During the entire 10-day hospitalization the patient remained in a severely deteriorated general condition.
The Clinic for Infectious Diseases continues to monitor the hospitalized patients and provide intensive care as needed while health officials track the situation.
