Heat arriving from North Africa will keep North Macedonia under a strong heatwave through next Monday, 31 August, meteorologist Slavcho Poposki said on 25 August 2026.

Temperatures above seasonal average — nights in some areas stay warm

“Especially in the Vardar region and in the southeastern parts of North Macedonia I expect that nights will remain tropical, meaning that temperatures in these areas will not drop below 20 degrees even during the night. Maximum daytime temperatures across North Macedonia will exceed 30/32 degrees, and in the Vardar region and in the southeastern parts of North Macedonia temperatures will climb close to 40 degrees.

In Skopje and surroundings in the morning the temperature will drop to around 19 degrees, and the maximum temperature in the aforementioned period will rise in the interval between 37 and 38 degrees.”

Forecasters warn that the heat is driven by a southerly air mass and will keep daytime highs well above what is typical for late August. The strongest heat is expected over the lowlands along the Vardar valley and in the country’s southeast.

Authorities and residents are being advised to take standard precautions during prolonged high temperatures: avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and check on vulnerable people. Local services may also face increased demand because of the heat.
