Plovdiv rises as a 2026 travel hotspot
Time Out highlights Plovdiv’s millennia‑old history, Kapana creative scene and the new PhilGood festival headlined by The Cure and Gorillaz.
Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second-largest city, has emerged as one of the unexpected travel highlights for 2026 after being singled out by Time Out as a European destination that deserves more attention.
Traveller and writer John Bils, who explored the city this year, says Plovdiv was long reserved for those "who know where to look."
Ancient layers and winding streets
Visitors encounter Plovdiv’s deep past in the Old Town, where cobbled lanes climb a series of hills and archaeological traces from Nebet Tepe sit alongside 19th-century National Revival houses that now host museums and galleries. The city’s story reflects a succession of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman presences that shaped its character for millennia.
The crown jewel is the ancient Roman theatre of Philipopolis, built in the first two centuries AD and ranked among the best-preserved theaters of its kind worldwide. It still functions as an atmospheric stage for concerts and cultural events, blending classical scale with contemporary performance.
For a very different side of the city, the Kapana neighbourhood — once a district of craftsmen and blacksmiths — has evolved into Plovdiv’s creative quarter, filled with galleries, boutique shops, modern hotels and lively bars serving craft beers. This year’s growing music calendar, including the new PhilGood festival with headliners The Cure and Gorillaz, adds another pull for international visitors.
Food is a vital part of the appeal: menus range from refreshing shopska salad to slow-cooked kavurma paired with the region’s wines, offering genuine local flavours that reward exploration.
Plovdiv’s convenient position is an added bonus: about 20 kilometres south sits the 11th-century Bachkovo Monastery, protected by UNESCO, and nearby Asenovgrad provides access to the scenic Asen Fortress and the Church of the Holy Mother of God. For travellers planning a short break, Plovdiv combines layered history, vibrant urban life and accessible nearby monuments.
