Dr. Nikola Stojanovski, former president of the Union of Fighters, has died
Stojanovski was a participant in the National Liberation Struggle and presided over the inaugural session of the first multi-party Assembly in January 1991.
Dr. Nikola Stojanovski has died. For many years he led the Union of Fighters of Macedonia, and in January 1991 he presided over the constituent session of the first multi-party Macedonian Assembly.
As a participant in the National Liberation Struggle, Stojanovski remained one of the living witnesses of the strike by Veles high school students in March 1942, organized in protest against the introduction of the Bulgarian language into instruction.
In the parliamentary composition at that time, in January 1991, he, as the oldest MP, chaired the first constituent session of the multi-party Assembly and supervised the opening procedure at a critical moment for the country's political development.
Long-standing public role
During his public engagement, Stojanovski was closely associated with the issues of the veterans' population and the Union of Fighters of Macedonia, which he headed for many years, representing the generation from the wartime events in various institutional and commemorative occasions.
His presence in public life linked experiences from the National Liberation Struggle with the political transformations at the end of the 20th century, including the events of March 1942 and the opening of the new parliamentary era in January 1991.
