Heavy rains flood parts of Bangkok; 84,000 affected in 21 provinces
Central and eastern Bangkok were inundated, authorities warn rains will continue until tomorrow.
Heavy downpours have flooded parts of Bangkok, forcing large-scale evacuations and halting traffic in several districts. Central and eastern areas of the city were hardest hit as streets and low-lying neighbourhoods filled with water.
Authorities report that more than 84,000 people across 21 provinces of Thailand have been affected by the floods, with the central region among the worst impacted. Local officials used mobile radio systems to issue warnings and coordinate emergency responses in affected communities.
Transport disruption and emergency measures
Floodwaters blocked major roads and slowed or stopped vehicular movement across flooded corridors of the capital. Emergency teams have been assisting residents to safer locations and opening temporary shelters for those displaced by the rising waters.
The Thai Meteorological Department warned that heavy rain is expected to continue across much of the country until tomorrow, prolonging the risk of further flooding and complicating relief operations.
Governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt, said authorities are preparing for additional heavy showers and urged residents in vulnerable areas to follow evacuation orders and safety guidance from local officials.
