Shock in football: SC Villa captain David Owori killed in Kampala attack
Owori was attacked in Makindye while returning home and later died at Case Clinic, the club and police said.
Football in Uganda and beyond was rocked by the killing of David Owori, captain of reigning Ugandan champions SC Villa, after a violent street attack in Kampala.
According to local reports, Owori was assaulted on Tuesday evening at about 20:00 in the Makindye neighbourhood while returning home. Witnesses say unknown attackers beat him with stone blocks, robbed him and left him unconscious on the street.
Passersby found the badly injured player and took him to a nearby clinic; he was then urgently transferred to Case Clinic. Medical staff fought to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Police launch full investigation
Police confirmed his death and said investigators are working to identify and arrest those responsible. Luk Owojesigire, deputy spokesperson for the Kampala metropolitan police, said: "At the moment we are searching for the attackers and conducting a comprehensive investigation. We are still determining the exact circumstances under which the attack occurred, as well as the details of what exactly was taken from him. More official information will be released after the investigative actions are completed."
SC Villa expressed deep grief for the loss. The club posted on social media: "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of our captain, David Owori, who had been receiving treatment at Case Clinic following an attack by suspected thugs. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with his family. Rest in peace, Captain."
Owori wore the captain's armband for SC Villa during the 2025/26 season and was regarded as one of the team's most experienced and influential players. The club urged the authorities to swiftly find and bring the perpetrators to justice, calling the killing a senseless loss for Ugandan football.
