Mother and son from Radovish charged with tax evasion after €579,015 deposit

Police in Strumica’s department filed criminal charges against a 47-year-old man from Radovish and his 71-year-old mother from the village of Kodzhalija on suspicion of tax evasion, authorities announced.

Bank transfers and undeclared income

According to the complaint, between 29 October 2019 and 2 November 2021 a private individual in Germany deposited 579,015 euros into a foreign-currency bank account held by the mother, on which her son was an authorized signatory. The amount equates to roughly 35.6 million denars.

Those funds were not reported as income under the Law on Personal Income Tax, allegedly with the intent to avoid paying tax. During a control procedure the Public Revenue Office determined that tax had been evaded in the total amount of 3,182,066 denars, including interest.

Investigators allege the 47-year-old then used the money to build an unauthorized real estate property and to buy movable assets within the country, concealing the origin of the funds.

Criminal charges for tax evasion were filed against both mother and son. In addition, the son faces accusations of money laundering and concealing proceeds from criminal activity, as well as charges related to illegal construction.
