Nearly 1.9 million people urged to evacuate as Typhoon Dujuan nears Japan
More than 1.9 million people in six prefectures were advised to leave their homes as Typhoon Dujuan brought violent winds and disrupted power and transport.
Japanese authorities declared a state of heightened alert as Typhoon Dujuan barreled toward the country, prompting safety evacuation advice for large numbers of residents.
More than 1.9 million people across six prefectures were advised to evacuate, while power outages affected over 50,000 households. Evacuation orders remain advisory rather than mandatory, and officials reported that more than 41,000 of the households without electricity were in Chiba Prefecture.
Transport and power disrupted
About 500 flights were cancelled and portions of rail services were suspended as the storm approached, causing widespread travel disruption across the affected regions.
Forecasters say Typhoon Dujuan was bringing sustained winds of 130 km/h with gusts reaching up to 194 km/h as it neared land.
Meteorologists linked Dujuan to a broader sequence of Pacific storms that have been intensified this year by a "super El Niño," which has raised ocean temperatures and, according to experts, increased the risk of unusually severe weather events.
