Rokas: von der Leyen to visit the region in two to three weeks, may be decisive for EU accession

EU Ambassador Michalis Rokas said on Friday that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit the Western Balkans in the coming weeks and that he hopes the trip will give new momentum to his country's EU accession process.

Rokas made the remark while attending an event at the Tabanovce border crossing. He said significant efforts have been under way recently to create the conditions for moving forward with accession steps.

Timetable and expectations

“I hope that soon we will have a regional visit by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. It is expected to take place in two to three weeks, so I hope her visit will be another decisive step towards launching the country's accession steps with the European Union,” Rokas said.

He underlined that the coming visit could play a decisive role in unlocking progress on negotiations, but he did not give a firm commitment about an immediate start of accession talks.

When asked specifically whether there were plans to adopt constitutional amendments with deferred effect to unblock the integration process, Rokas replied that he could not share such information publicly.
