Russia reports mass drone attack on Moscow region; at least two killed

Russian regional authorities reported a large-scale drone strike overnight that hit parts of the Moscow region, killing at least two people and wounding six, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said. Local officials reported fires at several residential buildings and a warehouse; a refinery was also damaged and flights at two airports were restricted.

“During the night, the Moscow Region was the target of a mass drone attack. Between 3:00 and 5:00 in the morning, air defense forces and electronic warfare systems shot down and neutralized 249 drones across 17 districts,” Vorobyov said.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said the capital repelled what he described as the most massive drone attack against the city. According to Sobyanin, Russian air-defense systems have destroyed more than 1,600 drones since yesterday, including 450 as they approached Moscow.

Ukrainian officials also reported attacks on the Kyiv region. Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv regional military administration, said the region was exposed to hostile strikes for more than 24 hours. He reported damage to 31 sites across five districts and said four civilians were killed, including three children.

Tkachenko added that among the fatalities were a mother and her two small children, and that another child wounded in the Vyshhorod area later died from injuries. The strikes also damaged residential buildings, vehicles, industrial and communal infrastructure, a power transmission line, an educational facility and a warehouse.

The claims from both sides underscore a continuing wave of drone attacks affecting population centres and infrastructure. Authorities on both sides reported large numbers of unmanned aerial vehicles intercepted overnight, and investigators are expected to assess the damage and civilian toll in the coming hours.
