U.S. strikes IRGC targets in Iran; Iran fires rockets and drones

U.S. forces carried out fresh strikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets inside Iran on September 1, 2026, and Tehran replied with rockets and armed drones aimed at American positions across the region, officials and state media reported.

Sequence of strikes and counterstrikes

U.S. Central Command posted that “Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran. The strikes follow recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against American service members deployed to the region.”

From Washington, President Donald Trump warned that Iran would face additional and more serious American military measures if it retaliated to the latest strikes. He wrote on Truth Social: "The United States is striking Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes are large and powerful and constitute retaliation for Iran's unsuccessful attempt to emplace naval mines in the strait." In a later interview on Fox News, Trump said U.S. forces hit radar systems Iran had been trying to reconstitute.

Tehran announced it launched rockets and drones against U.S. targets in the region in response to the new American attacks. Iranian military headquarters warned it would carry out "devastating and destructive strikes" on U.S. forces.

Iranian statements said rockets were fired toward American bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates; Jordanian state broadcaster reported air-raid sirens were activated in the Mafraq and Aqaba governorates. Tehran also reported four projectiles struck the port towns of Chabahar and Konarak in southeastern Iran, and state media recorded explosions east of Bandar Abbas and near Qeshm island in the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. officials say the strikes were prompted by recent IRGC attempts to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and an alleged effort to plant naval mines; Washington also accused Iran of targeting U.S. service members in the region. At the time of reporting there were no confirmed civilian casualties, and both sides claimed to have intercepted incoming munitions during the exchanges.
