Boiler ignites in old barracks of "STIV NAUMOV" dorm, students evacuated
A boiler in the old barracks ignited after a midnight water-supply return; students and staff extinguished the blaze and no one was hurt.
A boiler caught fire overnight in the old barracks of the student dormitory "STIV NAUMOV", forcing residents to evacuate. The incident occurred last night a few minutes after midnight when an explosion was heard and corridors filled with smoke.
Aleksandar Karadžoski, director of the State Student Dormitory, said the blaze started in one of the older barracks. Students and dormitory staff took part in extinguishing the flames with portable fire extinguishers.
How it happened
Karadžoski said the fire followed a disruption in the water supply. He described the sequence in a statement: "After the water supply interruption when, after midnight, the water returned, a boiler ignited in the old barracks of the 'STIV NAUMOV' student dormitory. Students and staff intervened and, using fire extinguishers, put out the fire."
There were no injuries reported and no student complained of smoke inhalation, Karadžoski added. Emergency services were not reported to have treated anyone at the scene.
Authorities evacuated residents as a precaution while ventilating the affected corridors and checking the building for further risks. Investigations into the exact cause of the boiler ignition are expected to follow.
