Scotland announce experienced squad for Nations League clash with North Macedonia

Scotland's head coach Sebastijan Pokonoli announced his squad on 15 September 2026, choosing a group of experienced players ahead of a busy UEFA Nations League window that includes a trip to face North Macedonia.

Pokonoli opts for experience for October clash

According to the announcement made today, Pokonoli has relied on tried-and-tested names as he prepares his team for the Nations League matches. The decision follows a similar move by Slovenia's coach Boštjan Cesar, who also published his selection on the same day.

North Macedonia will visit Scotland on 3 October 2026, the away fixture that Pokonoli singled out as a key challenge for his side. Before that match, North Macedonia will host Switzerland on 26 September 2026 and then travel to Ljubljana to play Slovenia three days later, on 29 September 2026.

The Scottish coaching staff signalled that the emphasis in this window is on stability and match-readiness, with public expectation in Scotland running high and pressure already present even before competitive play begins.

For North Macedonia, the October trip represents a difficult away test; the Macedonian team must also manage its September schedule that includes a home game with Switzerland and the away fixture in Ljubljana.

Both national teams now move into the preparation phase: Scotland with a veteran-laden list from Pokonoli, and Slovenia following Cesar's parallel announcement earlier on 15 September 2026.
