Steiermärkische Sparkasse Group notifies intent to acquire Uni Bank, would gain 17% of market

Steiermärkische Sparkasse Group has today formally submitted a notification of its intention to acquire all registered ordinary shares issued by Uni Bank AD Skopje, a move that would give the Austrian group roughly 17 percent of the North Macedonian banking market.

Next steps hinge on regulatory approvals

The company described the submission as an initial procedural step. The actual closing of the transaction and any takeover offer will depend on statutory and regulatory procedures. Those procedures include the mandatory prior approvals and consents from competent authorities in North Macedonia, as well as from relevant international regulatory bodies.

Uni Bank confirmed receipt of the notification and signalled that the process will follow the legal framework applicable to such operations in the country. The bank and the prospective buyer said they will continue to coordinate with regulators as the review proceeds.

Steiermärkische Sparkasse Group stated it remains fully committed to executing the subsequent steps in a successful, transparent and responsible manner, in accordance with applicable regulations and professional standards.

Observers say that, if completed, the deal would reshape market shares in the domestic banking sector by bringing a significant portion of Uni Bank’s business under an Austrian retail banking group.
