Skopje 2028 foundation launches calls to map city sites and collect 'Skopje Stories'
Two public calls ask residents to nominate places for a digital map and to submit at least 200 personal or collective ‘Skopje Stories’ for archiving and artistic reuse.
The Skopje – European Capital of Culture 2028 Foundation on 10 September 2026 launched two public calls inviting residents to help map the city’s cultural places and to contribute personal and collective stories that shape Skopje’s memory.
The first call, "Mapping locations, buildings and spaces for the Skopje 2028 programme", asks citizens to propose sites with potential for cultural or artistic use — from underused buildings and abandoned factories to parks, squares, streets, quays, courtyards and other spaces with historical, architectural, social or cultural value.
Digital register and resource for creative projects
Proposed locations will be reviewed and compiled into a registry and a digital map intended as a resource for artists, cultural organisations, institutions, project proposers, local communities, researchers and the general public.
The second call, "Skopje Stories", aims to gather and preserve the city’s living memory. Citizens are asked to submit personal or collective stories about people, places, streets, neighbourhoods, events, traditions and everyday life — including accounts of things that no longer exist but remain in Skopje’s memory. Submissions may be text, photos, audio, video, interviews or other material.
The Foundation plans to select at least 200 "Skopje Stories" to archive and to use as a basis for future artistic and cultural projects. Selected stories will be purchased and later offered, through a new public call, to the artistic and creative community for interpretation and presentation as part of the Skopje 2028 programme.
"Skopje is not only institutions, theatres, museums and galleries. Skopje is also the neighbourhoods, parks, squares, old factories, streets, courtyards and all the places where people meet, create and experience their city. But Skopje is not only what we see. Skopje is also what we remember, tell and pass on. That is precisely why the Foundation is opening the public calls ‘Mapping locations, buildings and spaces for the Skopje 2028 programme’ and ‘Skopje Stories'," said Foundation director Marjan Cvetkovski.
The calls opened on 10 September 2026. The deadline to submit proposals for the mapping call is 10 October 2026, and for the Skopje Stories call the deadline is 25 October 2026. Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s official electronic platform.
