Hungary says Ukraine’s EU accession by 2030 is unrealistic, says Anita Orbán

Hungary's foreign minister, Anita Orbán, said in Vilnius that she considers it unrealistic for Ukraine to become a member of the European Union by 2030.

Orbán stressed that Budapest supports a merit-based accession process and defended equal treatment for all candidate countries, arguing there should be no fast‑tracking for Kyiv.

Progress acknowledged, but timetable questioned

At the same time, Orbán noted that Ukraine has advanced in the accession process: four of six negotiating clusters have been opened. She linked part of that progress to improved relations between Hungary and Ukraine and to a bilateral agreement on protecting the rights of the Hungarian minority in the Zakarpattia region.

“We do not consider that realistic. We firmly support a merit‑based process and, in my view, we agree with Lithuania,” Orbán said during her visit to Vilnius.

“Every country must go through the same procedure we went through. We also do not support any accelerated accession,” she added, reaffirming Hungary’s position that accession rules must be applied uniformly across candidates.
