Collision between freight and passenger trains in Croatia leaves several injured
Crash occurred at 10.05 between Sveti Ivan Žabno and Gradec; the train driver suffered the most serious injuries.
A collision between a freight train and a passenger train in central Croatia on Saturday morning has left several people injured, authorities said. The incident occurred at 10.05 on the line between the stations Sveti Ivan Žabno and Gradec.
One crew member badly injured; line closed
Emergency services and police arrived at the scene, where rescuers treated multiple casualties. According to initial reports, the most seriously injured person is the train driver of one of the trains.
In a statement, Croatian Railways (HŽ) described the circumstances of the collision: "Today at 10.05, on the line between the stations Sveti Ivan Žabno and Gradec, a collision occurred between a freight train of HŽ Cargo and a passenger train of HŽ Passenger Transport.
According to currently available information, there are injured, but no fatalities. The passenger train had about 20 passengers.
Police and emergency services, as well as other competent services carrying out the necessary activities, are at the scene. Due to the accident, the railway line on the mentioned section is closed to traffic."
Investigators are looking into possible causes; one preliminary suggestion is that the freight train passed a red signal. Rail traffic on that section remains suspended while recovery and inspection work continues.
