TESSA Energy opens new cogeneration unit at Skopje North heating plant
First-phase €2.5 million cogeneration plant starts operation; a second €10 million upgrade is planned to build a modern energy centre.
On 12 September 2026 TESSA Energy formally put into operation a new cogeneration unit at the Skopje North heating plant, the company announced. The first-phase investment is €2.5 million; two generators at the site will produce 2.1 megawatts of electric power and 2.6 megawatts of thermal energy.
The company, which took over management of the former Toplana Skopje North in 2024, described the works as the opening step in a larger modernisation plan. A second phase is already planned, with an estimated investment of €10 million aimed at creating a modern energy centre on the site.
Management: modernisation and responsibility
Ajri Shej, manager of TESSA Energy, said the takeover carried obligations as well as business opportunity. "For us these were not just business decisions; we took over a very important energy facility but also a responsibility to preserve and further modernize the system that provides heat to households and other buildings in Chair and Butel. But we did not stop there. Even then we had a very clear vision to modernize the existing infrastructure and transform it into a modern centre for combined heat and power," he said.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski welcomed the project as an example of a domestic company driving green transition. "This is very important because domestic companies show that they can keep pace with the highest global trends. As the Ministry of Transport we will continue to support these investments and complete all administrative procedures as soon as possible so that we have more projects like this because the green economy is needed by the state," he said.
Nikoloski also pointed to other recent 21st-century investments in the country, mentioning a wind farm and airport renovation, and added a comment on opponents of data centres: "And while some oppose data centres and want us to return to the 19th century, we boldly move forward," he said.
