Analyses carried out in June by the Center for Public Health Veles show that the Topolka and Babuna rivers are not recommended for bathing this summer. Both waterways are mountain rivers that originate on Mount Jakupica, and local residents seeking relief from high temperatures are advised to use the municipal swimming pool or hotel pools in the wider Veles area.

Findings at specific measuring points

The tests flagged a problem at the Topolka measuring site in Chashka — "Chashka-kapalishte" — where water quality is considered degraded and the river cannot be used for bathing or recreational purposes. The report cites elevated turbidity and an adverse microbiological status; the microbiological classification for that sample was third class.

At the same time, the analysed water sample scored first and second class for the other parameters that were examined, meaning that some indicators remained within better ranges despite the concerns over turbidity and microbiology.

Babuna showed similar overall limitations in the June testing, which prompted the public health advice against swimming in both rivers for the season. As an additional note, Lake Mladost has been officially banned for bathing for two years.

The Center for Public Health Veles recommends that residents avoid informal bathing spots along Topolka and Babuna until conditions improve and follow updates from local authorities about water quality testing.
