What happened
Croatian authorities reported that the accident occurred this morning at 9:25 while the train was heading into Rijeka. According to HŽ Infrastructure, the driver informed the dispatcher immediately before the derailment that the brakes had failed and the train could not be stopped.
Shortly afterward the consist left the rails at the station entrance. Eleven wagons fell into a ravine, causing extensive material damage, while the locomotive and two wagons stayed on the line inside the station.
There were no injuries reported. Emergency crews and railway technicians have been working at the scene to secure the site and begin clearing the wreckage, a process that officials say will take time given the scale of the damage.
Because of the damage and ongoing recovery work, Meja station remains fully closed to rail traffic. Authorities did not give an immediate estimate for when the line will reopen.
Investigators are expected to examine the train's braking system and operational records to determine the precise cause of the failure and the derailment.
