Trump: US will "win very quickly" as US and Iran hold mediated talks
Trump said American and Iranian representatives spoke via intermediaries and declared the United States would soon prevail in the seven‑month conflict.
US President Donald Trump said last night that American representatives had held talks through intermediaries aimed at ending the seven‑month war with Iran and asserted that the United States would "win very quickly."
Trump told reporters that Washington and Tehran had been in contact via mediators and that a decisive American outcome was imminent. "We'll win. If you ask me that will be achieved one way or another. Everything will happen very quickly," he said.
Previous pauses and a rejected Iranian proposal
According to the White House account, US and Iranian representatives conducted mediated discussions yesterday despite earlier pauses in fighting. Washington and Tehran previously agreed to ceasefires twice, in April and in June, during indirect negotiations.
Those talks followed an Iranian proposal for a seven‑day ceasefire that the US rejected. The Iranian plan envisaged an end to hostilities in Iran and in Lebanon, the unfreezing of Iranian assets worth a billion dollars, lifting sanctions on Iranian oil and the removal of the US naval blockade of Iranian ports. In return, Iran would lift restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz and later negotiate over its nuclear programme.
Trump emphasised that yesterday's mediated contacts proceeded even though he had turned down the earlier Iranian proposal. Details on further steps or a timeline for any settlement were not provided by the president.
