Ohrid to build 'Green Room' for municipal waste sorting
Municipality of Ohrid has allocated 1.463.200 denars to convert a former underground-container site into a secured collection point for plastic, paper, glass and mixed waste.

The Municipality of Ohrid will build a "Green Room" on the site of the former underground containers to serve as a dedicated space for collecting and sorting municipal waste and recyclable materials. The municipality has set aside 1.463.200 denars (23.600 euros) from its budget to carry out the project.
The facility will accept mixed municipal waste as well as separately collected fractions with economic value — plastic, paper and glass — and will be fenced and secured to allow controlled temporary storage of municipal and commercial waste.
"'The "Green Room" represents a central place for collecting mixed municipal waste, as well as separate recyclable fractions with economic value, such as plastic, paper and glass. The space is properly fenced and secured, which enables safe and controlled temporary storage of municipal and commercial waste,' the Municipality said.
Location, access and users
The location was chosen because of its proximity to markets and catering businesses, which will be able to use the facility for waste disposal. Access will be simple and users will receive instructions on how to dispose of and sort their waste correctly.
Works are scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, and the Municipality has announced plans to build at least one more such object next year. The "Green Room" will be placed where the underground containers currently stand; those containers will be removed because they were damaged and no longer functional.
Proper use of the new facility will be monitored by an employee of the Public Enterprise "Ohridskomunalec".
"'The construction of such an object represents a step toward improving the waste management system, because proper sorting allows part of the waste to be separated instead of ending up together with the rest of the municipal waste. In this way conditions are created for more efficient collection and further handling of the waste,' said the Public Enterprise "Ohridskomunalec".
