Extraordinary inspection at Gevgelija Centre for Social Work after Biljana's death

An extraordinary inspection has been launched at the Centre for Social Work in Gevgelija following the death of 17-year-old Biljana Kirić. The Social Inspection within the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy carried out the unannounced check to establish how institutions handled the case and whether all prescribed protection measures for the minor were implemented.

The ministry said the inspection will examine how Biljana's case was monitored, what assessments were made, and whether the Centre for Social Work reacted in a timely and appropriate manner. The results are expected in the coming days.

Police response, legal steps and a safety plan

Earlier, Aleksandar Janev, director of the Bureau for Public Security, said police went to the scene immediately after the report and that the girl's partner was detained. After consultation with a public prosecutor he was released. A criminal complaint has been filed, a temporary protective measure was issued, and a safety plan for Biljana was prepared.

"On 21.10 in the early morning hours, the police, in accordance with the protocols, prepared a safety plan for the victim and the manner of implementing the urgent protective measure. Another fact in the meantime is that the police act exclusively according to the plan and the protocols, at which I note that now the late Biljana, the victim, and her parent, that is the father, were contacted and they stated that everything is fine and that they have no contact with the perpetrator, that there is no approach, and that the measure imposed by the court is being fully respected," Janev said.

Authorities emphasise the safety plan and the temporary court measure as central elements of the immediate response, while the inspection will determine whether earlier assessments and interventions met legal and professional standards.

Residents of nearby Bogdanci have announced a peaceful protest this evening to honour the prematurely lost life of their fellow citizen. Organisers demand greater institutional responsibility, prompt reactions and effective protection for victims of domestic violence.
