Strumica bans drinking water from the city fountain by the stadium

The city fountain by the stadium in Strumica has been banned for drinking since yesterday after laboratory tests found microbiological problems with the water.

Analyses of the fountain showed an increased presence of aerobic and mesophilic bacteria, prompting health authorities to prohibit its use for drinking.

Locals we spoke with said they were largely aware of the restriction. Many use that fountain to fill bottles because the water is drinkable and cold, and they hope the ban will be temporary.

Rural supplies also affected

The prohibition also covers tap water from the public supply in the villages of Rich, Popchevo, Belotino and Veljusa. Residents of Veljusa expressed surprise at the results, saying their supply comes from mountain springs that have been clean for decades.

The Food and Veterinary Agency issued the ban after an extraordinary inspection which found an absence of residual chlorine and contamination with bacteria – indicators of fecal pollution. The restriction applies to water meant for drinking as well as to its use as a raw material or any water that comes into contact with food in establishments that prepare, serve or trade food, and in all public institutions.
