Angelov: Fire from Kosovo crossed into North Macedonia, expected to be extinguished today
Directorate for Protection and Rescue says the blaze that crossed from Kosovo was partly contained yesterday and crews expect to put it out today.
A wildfire that began on the Kosovo side crossed into Macedonian territory and has remained active for several days, leaving a strong smell of smoke across many Skopje neighborhoods.
The head of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue (DPR), Stojanche Angelov, said the blaze was brought partially under control yesterday and that teams expect to extinguish it today.
Official assessment and public message
Angelov noted that when winds are unfavourable residents notice an unpleasant smoke odor spreading through the city. He urged people who are bothered by the smell to remember the crews working on the front lines.
"When the wind is unfavorable Skopje residents feel an unpleasant smell that comes from the smoke of this fire. But, then when citizens smell smoke from this fire, let them think of all the firefighters and all the volunteers and teams who participate in extinguishing it and every day face the fire," Angelov said.
Firefighters, volunteers and DPR teams continue operations where the fire crossed the border; authorities say the situation is under close monitoring while crews work to fully put out remaining hotspots.
