Ecology, water supply, municipal services and transparency top challenges for Strumica's local government

One year after the local administration in Strumica changed hands, residents and civic groups say the expectations for rapid improvement are colliding with inherited problems, tight finances and the slow pace of administrative reforms.

Civic organizations that have followed municipal work so far acknowledge some initial steps, but stress that promises must turn into sustained policies and measurable outcomes — especially in areas that affect daily life: environment, water supply, communal services and transparency.

Gjorgji Tanushev from the civic initiative Zdrava kotlina points out both limits and concrete needs. “For example, regarding ecology in the town. Komunalec is making some efforts, covering the landfill, but the town still has problems that cannot be solved at once, yet the question remains how this can be accelerated given that the funds the municipality sets aside for cleaning are clearly insufficient, so now we have a rise in fees and I personally hope that those small differences may contribute to a better town,” he says.

Calls for continued communication and faster responses

Observers insist the municipality must keep an open channel with citizens and make routine communication with neighbourhood councils more than a one-time initiative. Local communities remain the primary conduit for residents to report problems and expect follow-up.

Tanushev also noted concrete technical steps the administration has taken while urging these not to remain isolated acts. “What the municipality managed to bring during that financial squeeze — six additional measurement indicator stations and an investment to purchase an ozonator — is a significant achievement, I must say, because that was one of the key items in the campaign. The water problem, since Strumica often has supply interruptions, and especially after the large stoppages two years ago, must be watched carefully. It is good that the ozonator was procured but it must not remain the only thing. Certainly there will be other issues; air quality above all; some problems do not depend on the budget — for example those that burn at illegal dumps, or people burning cables, those do not need a separate budget. Inspection services must react immediately and that is visible to every one of us,” he said.

Looking ahead, consolidation of municipal finances should be paired with rationalising operations and producing visible improvements in services, infrastructure, support for small businesses and agriculture, and a clear spatial-development stance. For residents the essential question remains how quickly these changes will show up in cleaner streets, more efficient services and greater transparency in the life of the town.
