Mayor of Butel announces demolition of illegal building in Skopje North

Butel municipality mayor Darko Kostovski announced last week on Facebook that an illegal structure in Skopje North would be torn down, and the municipality published the notice on August 24, 2026.

Mayor says the site occupied state land and damaged public lighting

In his post Kostovski accused the occupier of taking over state property, building without permits and cutting a municipal lighting pole. He wrote that swift action and criminal charges would follow.

He posted the following message on Facebook: "Skopje North, municipality of Butel. He usurped state property, erected an illegal structure and cut a municipal lighting pole. On Monday follows a swift and decisive action to remove the illegal structure and, of course, a criminal complaint against the perpetrator. With such acts we cannot move forward, I appeal to reason. I will not allow local sheriffs to sell force which in essence is a gross violation of the law," he wrote.

The municipality said information about the planned demolition was expected today; Kostovski has tied the operation to a Monday deadline in his statement.

Local officials have signalled that anyone who damages public infrastructure will also face legal consequences, and Kostovski repeated that a criminal complaint will be filed against the person responsible.
